The Song Rising

No safe place. No surrender.

Following a bloody battle against foes on every side, Paige Mahoney has risen to the dangerous position of Underqueen, ruling over London's criminal population. But, having turned her back on Jaxon Hall and with vengeful enemies still at large, the task of stabilising the fractured underworld has never seemed so challenging.

Little does Paige know that her reign may be cut short by the introduction of Senshield, a deadly technology that spells doom for the clairvoyant community and the world as they know it . . .

The Song Rising is the third book in the Bone Season series.

Reviews

‘Evocative, smart, and exciting [...] Shannon vividly and purposefully realizes each meticulously detailed setting, from London's underground to outposts in Scotland, while infusing her imaginative, passionate, and gripping saga with profound insights into humankind's long, bloody history of tyranny and the radiant ones who zealously fight for freedom and justice.’ – Booklist

‘[N]ever less than captivating. A tantalising, otherworldly adventure with imagination that burns like fire – Kirkus Reviews

‘[E]ffectively mirror[s] current debates on immigration, violence, and equality. It is within the descriptions of this clairvoyant world that Shannon's writing shines[...]
This is a solid addition to the series’ – Library Journal

‘Shannon’s exploration of a futuristic, perilous Europe remains engaging and evocative [...] The narrative is fueled by a constant sense of tension, as well as both internal and external conflict’ – Publisher's Weekly

‘Paige shines as she finally gets the chance to take the fight to Scion, but also realizes that straightforward revolutions where "the world stands with you in your fight... [exist] only in daydreams." High-stakes play often ends catastrophically. The many-armed Scion monster receives further detail, growing into a fully formed evil empire with hints of conquests soon to be attempted.’ – Shelf Awareness

‘A story of strength, determination and the painful choices that must be made in order to secure their independence. The Song Rising continues the arc in The Bone Season series perfectly, setting the scene for a revolution in this dramatic world of magic. Fans of the series certainly won't be disappointed, it's an enthralling read that's full of surprises, and a gripping read from beginning to end.’ – Starburst Magazine

Since its still "under construction" can I request that you steam up Warden and Paige's relationship? Much too PG for my taste! Come on girl!

You have left me a lot to think about. I can barely wait for your next book. It's so hard to find a truly talented writer. Thank you so much for the riveting story and the beautiful way you write.

  6. I just absolutely love this series! Whenever I read these books I just cannot put them down! I love everything about them especially with how strong, compassionate, and ballsy Paige is.

What I love most about this series though is how well it is written. Everything is put together so well and so strong. You are a fine writer Shannon and I look forward to reading the remainder of the series and reading the books over and over again! So excited for the next book! :)

  7. Samantha, do me a favour. Please. Stop. The. Kissing.
Your books are amazing, I am quoting every day, and have read the. Over and over. I hate one bit in each book, I'll let you guess.
Warden is an otherworldly creature, distant and mysterious. How could he suddenly sweep her off her feet and kiss her?
The jump from enjoying one another's presence to the opening of shirts is ridiculous.
Plus, Warden earlier pointed out, that the reason Paige experienced pain while having sex with an amouratic was that their minds were like oil and water. If rephaite minds are like fire, with that logic, he could very likely kill her if it got any more "steamy" than that.
Warden, is a beautiful character. Don't ruin him.
Your books are amazing. Don't ruin them.
Fantasy is a wonderful genre. Don't soil it with porn.
    Please.

    1. NOOO! Ignore this! We want more Warden! It's fire like fireworks and it's amazing. Possibly the best part of the books so far. When he wasn't in the first part of book 2 I was legitimately sad. What kept me reading was the anticipation of him.

    2. I am looking forward to seeing the 'spark' ignite between these two characters. I don't think you have overdone it and in know way feel that this is even close to porn. I do think you have painted a provocative picture of the feelings between Paige and Warden that have definitely left me wanting more and for that I thank you.

    3. Just because Warden is an otherworldly creature, doesn't mean he still wont have needs! Even his species mate..duh

  8. Ignore the haters. Your series is to me what Harry Potter is to Millennials. I can't wait to see what happens in Book 3, much less the movie! You have truly created something special! Keep it up! Ignore the naysayers! I can't wait to see what happens to Warden and Paige. The other parts as well, but they are just incredible!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Erm, I think it's safe to say that Paige and Warden's relationship is a key part of the series, and one enjoyed by most readers, or at least not actively dislked. Also, Warden didn't mean minds are literally water, oil, and fire, so I doubt anyone's actually going to die as a result of physical intimacy. Speaking of which, since when is kissing or physical intimacy between two consenting individuals who care about each other pornography? There is certainly plenty of far less tasteful, less well-written writing in fantasy. I for one am personally looking forward to things heating up in a way that feels true to the characters.

  11. Your books are absolutely beautiful; the story is well-woven, amazingly told, and the vast array of characters make it so much more easy to read! If you can write like this at your young age, the thought of what you'll be capable of in the future when you're more experienced makes me quake at my desk! I'm so happy for you and your success!

  17. Hi Samantha... just finished Bone season
WoW! Beautifully written. You're such a breath of fresh air
and are embedded into my 'Dream scape' now for always.
I will be reading everything you put to paper as the writing style and concepts are so contemporary... each scenario carefully selected with the words painting vivid parallel multiverses.
Sometimes the spiritual use of Aether seems to be inline with the 'Bashar' teachings channelled through Daryll Anka... does that have any significance or mere coincidence?
Look forward to reading the next one!!
Bless you for your enormous talent enhancing my experience

    Much unconditional love..

  30. Samantha, I am utterly amazed that your next book wont be released until the end of next year. Must be time to get new publishers. By that time, your first two books will be forgotten. I read both as they came out on their very first day and am very sad that I am looking at another year before I get to read the next installment. Will it be 2020 before we get book 4? I am sorry for the pessimism, but your books, should they continue, come out more than once every two years. Rachel

    1. Hello,

I am very sorry for the wait. Unfortunately there's not a lot I can do about it from my end. I worked as quickly as I can on Book 3, but publishers schedule books for all sorts of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with the author.

I hope you'll still enjoy ‘The Song Rising’ when it comes out, and that it's worth the wait.

  37. I can't wait! This is the first time since Harry Potter that I've fallen so in love with a series. You're amazing at writing fight scenes. And I love the relationship between Paige and Warden. I was a bit worried at first that it developed too quickly, since there were still six books to go, but I thought you handled it very well in Mime Order.

The only thing I wonder about is the line in the text 'Little does Paige know that her reign may be cut short by the introduction of Senshield'. At the end of Mime Order she seemed to be very much aware of the danger of Senshield.

  38. OMG I LOVE THIS SERIES. Ok I'm cool now. My uncle got me the first for Christmas and I finished it pretty quickly then I couldn't wait to get the next one. My uncle got that one for my birthday. I finished it a couple days ago and the cliff hanger left me needing the next book. When is it going to be published? Do you have a date? And also can I give a suggestion? I think that one of the ranthen and maybe one of Paige's friends fall in love and then they find about Warden and Paige's relationship. I don't know if that would work but it would be cool to see. Thank you so much for this series. I was having a hard time finding books that I hadn't already read that I like.

  43. Well, here I am again thinking about the Bone Season series and waiting for the next book! haha I can remember I read The Mime Order during school and ALL I could think about when I left for the Uni was that I would not be able to read until I got back. I´d space out in my engineering materials class thinking about it (oops). One day my street was flooded and so I couldn´t leave for class and I was secretly SOO releaved! I was reading a particular good part in the book hahaha. Don´t worry, I actually got pretty good grades in my classes with my spacing out and everything .

Anyway, I think not many people talk about this enough but I ADORE the relationship between Nick and Paige. I´m so incredibly fond of Nick now, and it breaks my hearts to see him suffer. He deserves to be happy after everything he´s endured. I´m crossing my fingers for him and Zeke. Another thing that I´m ACHING to know is Zeke´s and Nadine´s back story, what could have possibly happened to Zeke to become an unreadable?.. I´m the kind of reader who wants to know how EVERYTHING works in this new worlds, cultures and the hole story of the characters to understand them better and see how everything really weaves together.

Well that´s the end of my rant ;)

My best regards to you and looking forwards to the next book! - M
